Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father was a carnival barker, passed away as a young girl, requiring her mother to support the family by working as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth was raised in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. However, she was only in school for a couple of years, then leaving to pursue her acting career. The path was difficult to follow. While she was offered an opportunity in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication, no theatre jobs came her way. She then worked as a hat check girl at a night club before calling it quits and returning to Boston. In Boston, when she worked at evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time she was an usherette. The study of drama helped her to earn her degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
